Below is a breakdown of the different services I offer and how to tell which service is the best fit for your project. Once you think you know what your project needs, head on over to my Contact Page so that we can get in touch!
With developmental/content editing, I take an in-depth look at your project as a whole, looking at how everything ties together. In manuscripts, I focus on areas such as plot, characters and character development, setting, organization, genre, etc. The overall goal of this type of edit is to see where your manuscript needs fine-tuning in order to make it the best it can be. For smaller projects, I look at the overall function of your project and look for ways to fine-tune the organization, structure, tone, and message. This is a great starting place for projects in the beginning stages or if you would like an outside perspective.
Line editing is another form of in-depth editing that looks at how each word, sentence, paragraph, and section functions to suit the needs of the whole. For manuscripts and smaller projects that are well organized and don’t need changes to overall organization or structure, I recommend this type of edit.
When copyediting, I look at the overall grammar and syntax of the document. If there are any word consistency documents, style guides, or brand specifications that need to be followed, I check for adherence to these guidelines. I usually edit using the Chicago Manual of Style, but I’m happy to accommodate other style guides on a case by case basis. I recommend copyediting for projects where organization and structure aren’t of primary concern.
Proofreading is the last stage of the editing process where I look for any glaring grammar or syntax errors, or it can be used to ensure that all of the text and other elements made it from one version to the next before being finalized. If your project has already gone through several editing phases and you would just like a second set of eyes, this is the service I recommend.
Not sure what stage your project is in? That’s OK! I understand that every project is unique, and you might not know what stage it’s in. Head over to my Contact Page and select the “I’m not quite sure” option so that we can set up a meeting to chat about your project.
